View your GPSies routes with RoutePics

4 03 2011

Now it’s starting to warm up you might be thinking about hitting the trails again. And here’s just the app to use on your iPhone/iPad, called RoutePics, which let’s you view GPSies routes over OSM (OpenStreetMap) maps.

Explore routes and trails throughout the world. See photos from the same area and get a better feel for the place.

RoutePics uses OSM mapping (OpenCycleMap images) to show you GPSies trails wherever in the world people have been. Pan and zoom round the map, or type somewhere into the name finder to go straight there.

Grab a promo code to try the app out here (be quick before they go though).

Or find out all about the app on iTunes here.

Take geocaching to the limit!

28 08 2009

Are the majority of caches a bit tame for you? Then check out this site, Extreme Caching.com

ExtremeCaching

On the site you will find reviews, recommendations and experiences by other thrill seeking cachers. The photo gallery is excellent too, showing off some of the challenges that await.

The site is pretty new so the caches are limited and mostly in the US, but I’m sure over time new and challenging caches will be added. Congrats to the extreme caching.com team for putting this together.

Geocaching for the kids

20 05 2009

My kids absolutely love geocaching and as we don’t have a dog it’s a great way to get us all out of the house on a dreary Sunday. But our trips out into the wilderness are not without the usual wrangling over who is going to carry and use the trusty Garmin Vista HCx. I’ve no problem handing the Garmin over to the kids but try to look away, usually as the unit is either being swung around or all the buttons and menus have been flicked through and we’ve ended up heading in the wrong direction!

Geomate.jr

Well now it looks like there might now be a solution and whilst hunting on the web I came across Geomate.jr. This friendly little device is designed from the ground up for kids and is extremely clear and simple to use. It also comes with 250,000 pre-loaded cache locations, but the downside is that these are only available in the US today. So for now, us folks in Europe will have to wait and hope the device makes its way across the pond sometime soon!

Click here for the Geomate.jr website and here for an interesting review on cnet.

Start Geocaching with your mobile

2 02 2009

So you want to start Geocaching but you’re worried that you’ll need to dig deep into your pocket and purchase a dedicated GPS unit, well think again. You’re probably already carrying around a GPS enabled mobile phone that’s just ripe for Geocaching. All you need to get started is a GPS enabled mobile phone, a Geocaching application for your phone and an account on www.geocaching.com. Applications are available for all of the top mobile phone platforms, Windows Mobile, Nokia and iPhone. I’ve listed an example for each platform below,

Windows Mobile – With BeeLineGPS for Pocket PC you can import GPX files and manage thousands of waypoints with its advanced Waypoint Manger. The BeeLineGPS application also includes active waypoint technology where a waypoint can trigger a warning window for speed traps, safety cameras or play a sound byte while on a guided tour. Other features include waypoint averaging, altitude profiling and a comprehensive trip computer.

Nokia – Geocache Navigator from Trimble was developed in partnership with Geocaching.com and is available for a variety of phones. You can even get a  free version of Geocache Navigator for your Nokia N95, Nokia N82 and Nokia 6110 Navigator phones here

iPhone – The iPhone application from Groundspeak is a lovely looking application, making full use of the iPhones large screen. Here is a list of the key features:

• Search by current location, address or lookup code
• Access geocache details, including description, hint and recent logs
• Save geocache listing for quick retrieval
• Log geocache finds and post notes in the field
• Filter your hides and finds from the Geocaching.com search results
• Navigate to geocaches with a simulated compass arrow
• Look up trackable item detail, including item goals, while on the trail

The Geocaching iPhone Application can be purchased from iTunes Store and is available in Dutch, French and German language versions.

Night Rider

31 01 2009

The days are getting longer but for those of us who long to get out on our bikes as often as possible this can be a problem. To get around this I recently invested in a decent light.

Rather than taking the plunge and opting for one of the top of the range light sets that retail for £400 and over, I went for a light which I hope will let me get a taste for night riding. After much research I plumped for the Exposure Joystick Maxx, it’s an absolute beast of a light, incredibly tiny, fantastically well made and one that I totally recommend (also check out the glowing (pardon the pun!) reviews on line and on YouTube)

Exposure Joystick Maxx

In addition to using the light for cycling I’ve found that because of its size it is extremely versatile too. I’ve used the light when geocaching, camping, finding lost items under furniture and hunting around the garage. The Joystick Maxx can be used with a lanyard or attaches to your bike or helmet with ease, depending on the various accessories you buy with the light.

I’m on a mission to test the light out off road at night, should make for some fun riding!
